Let’s step back from our discussion on practical changes to our health care system and talk about something a little bit different. If we had a chance to start from scratch, what would the ideal health care system look like?
Here are some important questions that need to be answered:
- Would the system be highly regulated or not regulated at all?
- If it could not pay for everything that anyone might want, how would the system make sure the most important care was covered?
- Who would pay for it?
- How would it be resistant to abuse?
- Who would it cover?
- How would it ensure safety, quality and efficiency?
- Would patients be in charge of their own care?

I think the two most important questions here are costs, and the quality of care. The health care system obviously needs to be regulated and the perscriptions pills need to be affordably priced as this is getting way out of hand. Take a look at Canada’s health care system. You pay a monthly premium and you pretty much get full coverage. There are extended heath care plans you can buy as well and of course many employers offer health and dental care at their establishments. You never have to worry about cancer or open heart surgery as you are covered. Do some research on Canada’s health care system and perhaps in some minute way you may be able to incorporate their policy into yours.
